Internal Number Assignment for GTINs

Hello my fellow SAP Gurus,

Are there any CPG companies out there who are using internal number assignment for GTINs or package UPCs in the material master?

We have some requirements that may force us to continue to use External Number assignment or customize, but I want to confirm this.

We have a number range of GTINs that we've purchased from GS1.  We'd like to create our internal number range to coincide with this purchased number range.  I've tried this in config in our development system and I can do this, but the number buffer skips several numbers at a time.  Does the system ever go back and reuse the numbers it skipped?  It continues to skip numbers even though I turned off number buffering for this object.  Because we have to purchase GTIN numbers I would never want to leave numbers unused like this.

The second challenge is that we make products for other companies and they will provide us with a GTIN to use for the products we produce for them.  In this case we'd externally assign this number.  The problem is that this could fall before my internal number range for one customer and after my number range for another customer.  I cannot create an internal number range that is overlapped by an external number range.  I also cannot assign more than one number range to a EAN category in config.

Lastly, if we used internal number assignment and a GTIN was assigned but needed to be overwritten, would the system ever go back and reuse the GTIN that was overwritten?

I can't imagine we're the only company that faces this scenario.  Do we need to abandon the idea of using internal number assignment for this?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Jason
